The wildly popular In-N-Out burger chain didn’t add hot cocoa to its menu — the first addition in 15 years — for business reasons.

The decision appears to be a nostalgic one made by president Lynsi Snyder, whose grandparents founded the company in 1948 in Southern California.

“This is actually the return of hot cocoa,” Snyder said in a statement quoted by our sister paper, the Orange County Register. “My grandparents, Harry and Esther Snyder, served it for many years beginning in the ’50s. I’m not sure how it fell off the menu but it’s part of our culture and something special for kids, and I’m happy that we’re bringing it back.”

And, she said, the cocoa is sourced from another iconic California company: Ghirardelli
Chocolate, which was founded in 1852 in San Francisco.

The 8-ounce cups of cocoa sell for $1.60. Lemonade was the most recent menu addition for In-N-Out; that happened about 15 years ago.

According to the company, cocoa is now available in all of its restaurants in California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Texas and Oregon. (Long-range plans call for a big expansion into Colorado.)
